The Wedding Candle Mistake That Almost Lit a Guest on Fire

Candles at weddings are timeless! Soft light, warm glow, instant romance. They elevate any space, but like anything involving fire, they need to be used with intention. I’ve seen candles add the perfect finishing touch… and I’ve also seen how quickly things can take a dangerous turn.

One of my favorite ways to include candles is in the ceremony itself. A candle lighting ritual can be incredibly meaningful: both sets of parents (or even grandparents) come forward to light a candle, then the couple uses their individual flames to light one main unity candle. It’s symbolic, inclusive, and makes your loved ones feel part of the moment.

Another beautiful idea is to think about signature scents. Imagine guests walking into your reception and noticing how good everything smells. Strategically placing candles in restrooms, entryways, or lounge areas can make your wedding feel polished and thoughtful. I once stepped into a restroom at a wedding and was blown away by how incredible the candle smelled. It was such a simple detail, but it made a lasting impression.

But here’s the big tip: not every space should have a candle.I learned this the hard way. At a recent wedding, a candle was set beside the guest book. As I approached to confirm a toast with the bride’s aunt, she leaned over to sign. In that split second, her hair brushed against the flame and caught. Without thinking, I swatted the spark out of her hair before it could spread. If I had been even ten seconds later, her hair would’ve gone up in flames. Toast canceled, night ruined, and an emergency on our hands.

So yes, candles add romance, but placement matters. Restrooms? Absolutely. Lining tables? Gorgeous. Guest book table? Hard pass.

Candles can be both beautiful and dangerous, and your wedding deserves the beauty without the panic. Thoughtful placement, intentional use, and a touch of creativity will make sure your candles glow for all the right reasons.
